On this page, you will find a very brief summary of the main information on services for people with visual disabilities.
Before travelling, we recommend that you contact our Infoline +39 02 48 607 607 at least one hour before leaving to get information on your chosen route.
On the underground
Tactile pathway and tactile station map
The stations listed below are fitted with LOGES pathways (which stands for Orientation, Guidance and Safety Line in Italian), a guidance system on the ground to help direct people with visual disabilities inside the stations from above ground down to the platforms and back again. Tactile stations maps written in Braille and raised characters can also be found on the mezzanine floors, which direct passengers to the stairs and the lifts. The lift buttons are written in Braille and raised characters.
- M1 Line: Rho Fiera Milano, Pero and Duomo
- M2 Line: Abbiategrasso, Assago Nord and Assago Forum
- M3 Line: Maciachini, Dergano, Affori Centro, Affori FN and Comasina
- M4 Line: all stations
- M5 Line: all stations
Entry barrier gates
There is a special gate reserved for disabled people alongside the entry barrier, located next to the Station Controller’s booth, which is operated by a horizontal bar. There is a ticket validating machine next to this gate, which makes a noise when a ticket is validated and a different sound when there is an error. Furthermore, you can let the Controller know the name of the station where you intend to alight so the driver can provide any special assistance if necessary.
When you pass the barrier, you can request assistance from the Station Controller or indicate the name of the station where you intend to alight if you would like to receive assistance when alighting the train. There is a special gate on the M4 and M5 lines: please use the intercom systems at the stations for more information or assistance.
Raised pavement indicating the end of the safe area (yellow strip) at the edge of the platform
At all the stations on the M1 Line, M2 Line (except for Villa Fiorita, Bussero and Villa Pompea) and all of the M3 Line, there is a section of paving with small raised semi-circular bumps running along the edge of the platform to indicate the end of the safe area; the yellow strip creates a contrast of colours against the rest of the paving.
Platform screen doors
All the stations on the M4 and M5 line are equipped with automatic platform screen doors that guarantee increased safety for passengers and help to prevent people and objects from falling on the track, while also restricting any unauthorised access. The LOGES pathways at the stations lead directly to the platform screen doors.
Raised pavement indicating the connection between the two Traction Units of the train
To prevent passengers from falling onto the track as they board the train, we have installed a section of paving with small raised semi-circular bumps at the connection point between the two Traction Units of the train located on the platforms at all the stations on the M1 Line (except for Rho Fiera and Pero, where there is no risk of falling since the LOGES pathways direct visually impaired passengers at either end of the platform), the M2 Line (except for Villa Fiorita, Bussero and Villa Pompea) and all of the M3 Line.
Tannoy announcements
At all the stations on the three underground lines, except for the final stops when the announcement is given by the driver, a tannoy announcement system indicates the name of each stop when the doors open. For the new M2 and M3 stations, this service will be in operation in the next few months.
At the M1 Pagano stations and at all the M2 stations from Famagosta to Cascina Gobba, a tannoy announcement system indicates the destination of the train.
On the M4 and M5 Line, the tannoy announcement system is in service on the platform and on the trains.
Required assistance
If you need assistance, we recommend going directly to the Station Controller. Our Controllers continuously monitor the platforms at all the stations via closed circuit television cameras linked to the monitors in their booths. These pictures can also be seen in the Operations Room.
To allow passengers to communicate with the Station Controller and the Operations Room, there are SOS video and audio intercom systems on the platforms and on the mezzanine floor.
- M1 Line and M2 Line: intercom systems are located on the main platform
- M3 Line: three video intercom systems are located on the platform (one at each end and one in the middle), with at least two additional video intercoms on the mezzanine floor.
All the stations on the M4 and M5 lines are monitored by cameras. All the lifts have cameras inside and outside.
This system guarantees constant careful supervision 24/7 inside the stations (entrances, entry gates, self service machines, WCs, escalators, connecting walkways and platforms). The same system is in operation inside the trains, with 8 cameras to ensure the highest possible safety for passengers and to allow prompt action to be taken in the event of an emergency.
In the event of an emergency, passengers should:
1. contact the control room by pressing the SOS button on the intercom systems found in all carriages and at the stations;
2. if you are on a train: pull the special handle, bearing in mind that the train will not stop until the next station; once the train has stopped, the passenger who sounded the alarm can report the issue to staff.
Emergency signalling system at the station
A flashing light with a warning sound has been installed at several points on the mezzanine floor and on the platforms of each station. If this system is on, it means you have to leave the station immediately due to an emergency.
Restrooms
If the station has a LOGES pathway, it will lead to the entrance of the restrooms, except for restrooms located on commercial premises.
On the train
The floor of the train is the same level as the platform: this allows passengers to board and alight the carriage easily. However, you should always mind the gap between the platform and the train when boarding or alighting.
To avoid falling on the tracks, the trains on the M1, M2 and M3 lines have rubber protectors in the coupling gaps between the carriages of the same Traction Unit in trains that do not have interconnecting coaches.
Warning sounds and tannoy announcements
When the train is on the platform, a warning sound will indicate when the doors are open, which can also be heard inside the carriage. On all trains, a warning sound will indicate when the doors are closing.
The Meneghino trains have an announcement system that indicates the destination and the next stop. A total of 40 Meneghino trains can be found on the three underground lines and are divided as follows: 20 trains on the M1, 11 on the M2 and 9 on the M3. On the M4 and M5 Lines, the tannoy announcement system is in service on the platform and on the trains.
SOS intercom for reporting an emergency
Inside every carriage on the M1, M2 and M3 lines, there is an intercom system near to the first door of the coach that allows passengers to communicate directly with the Operations Room in an emergency. There are two intercom systems in every carriage on the M4 and M5 Lines, bringing the total to eight.
On the overground
Platform stops
The platforms stops located along the route of certain lines are served by low-floor carriages and suitable for the construction specifications of such vehicles. In addition to being larger, they have also been built to the same height as the floor so passengers can board and alight the vehicle more easily. They are also fitted with LOGES pathways on the approach to the carriage. For more details, please download the PDF at the end of the page.
53% of bus shelters have an information display with yellow writing on a black background, making them suitable for visually impaired people, which indicates the vehicle arriving and the waiting time, while also providing updates on the city’s transport system.
On board
We have increased the font size of the display on all our new vehicles, which indicates the line number and the destination, to guarantee better visibility from outside the vehicle. These displays can be found on 32% of trams, 100% of city buses and 42% of trolleybuses.
Low floor
To make access easier, all the city buses, the new trolleybuses and the new city trams are fitted with a low floor, i.e. they do not have steps for getting on and off the vehicle but are instead equipped with a retractable ramp. For more details, please download the PDF at the end of the page.
Warning sounds and tannoy announcements
Once on board, the electronic magnetic reader will make a warning sound when you validate your ticket, indicating that it has been properly validated. All the overground vehicles are equipped with a tannoy announcement system that indicates the next stop.
Guide dog travel
Guide dogs are allowed on overground and underground transport for free even if they are not muzzled.
