Regulations
Below we list the most important regulations for the correct use of this service:
- each passenger may transport only one bicycle
- passengers with bicycles must enter and exit stations and platforms using the stairs
- passengers with bicycles may use the lifts but not the escalators
- passengers with bicycles must enter and exit stations using the turnstile for prams, pushchairs and bulky baggage next to the Station Operator’s booth, and follow the signs provided
- passengers with bicycles may board only the second and fifth carriages from the front of the train through the doors marked with a bicycle symbol
- within the Milan city limits a maximum of 8 bicycles are allowed in each carriage marked with a bicycle symbol
- outside the Milan city limits children under the age of 12 may transport bicycles only when accompanied by an adult
- groups of over 10 cyclists should call ATM’s Freephone number 800.80.81.81 at least two working days in advance of their journey to arrange for transport and any necessary assistance from station staff.
In all cases, access to trains by passengers with bicycles depends on the availability of space inside trains. On specific occasions – or whenever safety conditions or other valid reasons render it necessary – the bicycle transport service may be temporarily suspended.
Passengers transporting bicycles are personally liable for any damage caused to persons, objects and to themselves. Specifically they must:
- ensure that the wheels of their bicycle are clean
- follow the marked routes both when entering and exiting stations
- carry their bicycle over their shoulder whilst on the stairs
- wheel their bicycle next to them on level areas. Riding bicycles in station areas, resting bicycles against the walls or parking them inside stations is strictly prohibited
- on board trains bicycles must be positioned in such a way as to avoid causing inconvenience to other passengers, resting against the poles and held in place to prevent them falling over.
Reclaiming bicycles left on trains
When emergencies occur which require that passengers be evacuated from trains, bicycles must be left on board. In such cases, or when lost, bicycles may be reclaimed by their owners from the Surveillance personnel at the Depot where the train is taken, after showing the travel document used on the day that the bicycle was left/lost and a valid identity document.
After 30 days, any bicycles not collected will be handed over by ATM to the Lost and Found Office of the Municipality of Milan.
