On this page, you will find a very brief summary of the main information on services for people with motor disabilities.
To guarantee the safety of our clients, passengers who use wheelchairs on all purposely-fitted ATM vehicles can only board if their wheelchairs are within the following size and weight limits: width 75 cm, length 120 cm, height 109 cm and maximum weight 200 kg. ATM is not responsible for any wheelchairs outside the indicated limits that board its vehicles.
For information on the journey to be made and the systems for getting on and off the means (mobile stairs, stairlifts and elevators) we recommend contacting our Infoline 02.48.607.607 at least one hour before departure, and informing of the wheelchair dimensions.
Please consult the network map to find out about the accessible stations.
On the underground
Escalators
Escalators are available at almost all stations. Please always keep to your right on the escalators. See the attachment
Stairlifts
To allow wheelchair users to reach the different levels of the stations and to travel back above ground, there are stairlift facilities, with an electrically operated mobile platform. A sign displaying the special symbol outside the station will indicate whether this facility is available.
Lifts
Certain stations are equipped with lifts connecting the different levels; the Station Controller will continuously monitor these lifts via a television circuit to ensure your personal safety.
Signed routes
All the stations are equipped with specific signs directing you to these access facilities via a specially designed route.
Entry barrier gates
Disabled people may use the special gate alongside the entry barrier, located next to the Station Controller’s booth, which is operated by a horizontal bar. There is a ticket validating machine next to this gate. Furthermore, you can let the Controller know the name of the station where you intend to alight so the driver can provide any special assistance if necessary.
There is a special gate on the M4 and M5 lines: please use the intercom system at the stations for more information or assistance.
Required assistance
If you need assistance, we recommend going directly to the Station Controller. Our Controllers continuously monitor the platforms at all the stations via closed circuit television cameras linked to the monitors in their booths. These pictures can also be seen in the Operations Room.
To allow passengers to communicate with the Station Controller and the Operations Room, there are SOS video and audio intercom systems on the platforms and on the mezzanine floor.
- M1 and M2: intercom systems are located on the main platform
- M3: three video intercom systems are located on the platform (one at each end and one in the middle), with at least two additional video intercoms on the mezzanine floor.
All the stations on the M4 and M5 lines are monitored by cameras. All the lifts have cameras inside and outside.
This system guarantees constant careful supervision 24/7 inside the stations (entrances, entry gates, self service machines, WCs, escalators, connecting walkways and platforms). The same system is in operation inside the trains, with 8 cameras to ensure the highest possible safety for passengers and to allow prompt action to be taken in the event of an emergency.
In the event of an emergency, passengers should:
1. contact the control room by pressing the SOS button on the intercom systems found in all carriages and at the stations;
2. if you are on a train: pull the special handle, bearing in mind that the train will not stop until the next station; once the train has stopped, the passenger who sounded the alarm can report the issue to staff.
Emergency signalling system at the station
A red flashing light with a warning sound has been installed at several points on the mezzanine floor and on the platforms inside each station. If this system is on, it means you have to leave the station immediately due to an emergency.
Restrooms
There is a list of the stations with accessible restrooms for people with motor disabilities in the attached table
On the train
In line with existing legislation, only one disabled passenger in a wheelchair is permitted to travel on each underground train, who is solely responsible for using the reserved space and the relevant safety device. This reserved space can be found in the first carriage at the front of the train, near to the door closest to the driver’s cabin. The underground trains on the M1, M2 and M3 lines are equipped with a chain device to secure the wheelchair; while on the M4 and M5 lines there is a safety belt.
Carriages with a reserved space for disabled people in wheelchairs
People in wheelchairs may use the transport system provided that they can easily get to the platform, enter the carriage without any difficulty and correctly position themselves in the reserved space.
In line with existing legislation, only one disabled passenger in a wheelchair is permitted to travel on each train, who is solely responsible for using the reserved space and the relevant safety device.
Wheelchair users must travel in the carriage that is first according to the running direction of the train, near the door closest to the driver’s cabin. On Meneghino and Leonardo trains, wheelchair users should still travel in the first carriage, but near the second door.
On the M5 line, you can ask for assistance by pressing the special button located next to the wheelchair space. To request assistance, please hold the button for at least 5 seconds.
Passengers in wheelchairs must go to the front of the platform and may only board the train if the reserved space is not occupied by another wheelchair passenger. If the space is being used, you must stay on the platform and wait for the next train to arrive. If the train driver sees a wheelchair passenger on the platform, he will provide assistance if requested by the passenger.
Wheelchair restraint system
The wheelchair must be secured in the carriage for your safety when travelling.
The trains on the M1 and M2 lines, and certain trains on the M3 line, are fitted with a manual safety system consisting of a chain connected to one of the three steel bars; a karabiner is fixed to the free end of the chain to secure the wheelchair. To use this system, the passenger should position the wheelchair within the space marked out by the three bars and put on the parking brakes of the wheelchair, then wrap the chain around a part of the wheelchair so that it cannot be removed and secure it with the karabiner.
Certain trains on the M3 line are equipped with an automatic safety system that locks the wheels of the wheelchair through two wedges that can be retracted from the wall of the carriage next to the driver’s cabin. To use this system, passengers should position the back of the wheelchair to the device so the wedges can be fastened under the wheels of the wheelchair and then press the button for the wedges. Press the button again to release the wedges. All these operations for using the safety devices must be performed by the disabled passenger or a helper.
The M5 line is fitted with a safety belt restraint system.
SOS intercom for reporting an emergency
Inside every carriage on the M1, M2 and M3 lines, there is an intercom system near to the first door of the coach that allows passengers to communicate directly with the Operations Room in an emergency. There are two intercom systems in every carriage on the M4 and M5 lines, bringing the total to eight.
