Travel pass on the smartphone

No more cards: travel with the app - download it here

Thanks to the the new app, it is no longer needed to hold a travel card to be activated at the totems in metro stations:

  • buy your travel pass or renew it from the app
  • touch in and out at the readers in the metro and onboard to validate
  • show the travel pass on the app at our staff during a check

Do you have a travel card? Here's how to transfer the pass on the app

  1. Download the ATM app or update it
  2. Register or log in with your email and password (forgot password?)
  3. If you have not yet saved the card on the app, do so from the Buy menu on the app. The card will appear in the Profile menu. Tap the transfer button to switch to the digital travel pass
  4. The pass loaded on the card will appear on the Wallet menu of the app. After the switch, the physical card is automatically deactivated and can no longer be used

New subscriber? Get a full digital travel pass

  1. Download the ATM app and register (if you already have an ATM account, you can use that)
  2. Buy your first travel pass from the Buy menu : just fill in the form and add a photo (you can shoot on the spot or select it from your phone album). Pay by credit card, PayPal (also in 3 instalments) or Satispay
  3. Your new travel pass will be loaded in the Wallet menu of the app

Touch in and out at the reader with the app to travel

  • Keep the app opened and in the foreground while you touch in and out with the phone at the reader (please note: if the app is in the background, a credit card in the phone's Wallet might be read instead of the travel pass, with the risk of unwanted charges
  • The digital travel pass uses Bluetooth (on iPhones) and NFC (on Android phones) technologies. These functions are enabled from the Settings menu of the phone
  • If the reader can’t read the travel pass, you can always validate with the QR code. You can find the code in the menu Wallet > Cards > QR Code. Than bring your phone close to the QR reader (hold it at least 5 centimetres away).
  • The pass can be read even if there is no network. It cannot be read if the phone is turned off.

Things to know before switching to a digital travel pass

  1. Digital Travel passes do not currently issue an electronic invoice. We suggest you to keep the physical card if you need an invoice for tax reasons (e.g. to deduct expenses from a VAT number). However we remind you that you do not need an invoice to deduct travel pass expenses in your tax return. You need the purchase summary along with other proofs of the payment (please ask your tax advisor for more information)
  2. Digital travel passes can be refunded at ATM Points. The counters receive by appointment. Appointments can be booked via the app.

During a check, just show the app

Open the app and tap on the menu Wallet > Digital Card > QR Code. Our staff will read the code by their device to check whether the pass is valid (the subscription is read even if there is no service, not if the phone is turned off).

Travel passes on the phone are accepted outside Milan and on the lines of other operators

Travel passes on the phone are valid to travel exactly where travel cards are:

  • in all the zones belonging to the Integrated FAre System (STIB), from Mi1 to Mi9 zone
  • on board of public transport services accepting STIBM fares

On board non-ATM lines you must show the travel pass on the app to the staff both for travelling and during a check.

ISEE discounts and Esselunga travel passes can be transfered on the phone too

Simply save the card on the app and switch to the digital travel pass by following the instructions. When the travel pass expires :

  • ask your contact person if you have a travel pass issued by your employer or a company
  • contact your tax advisor if you have an ISEE travel pass
  • buy a new travel pass on the Esselunga website

You will be given a new card, and than you can switch to a digital pass again.

Want to change your phone? You can move your travel pass

The change is limited for security reasons.

  1. Download the app to your new phone and log in
  2. An alert will inform you that your travel pass is on another phone
  3. Confirm that you want to move it

Travel pass fares do not change. And the card on the app is free

Travel passes on the phone have the same fares as those on the cards. The digital card on the app is free of charge.

How to go back to your old plastic travel card, free of charge

If you want to bring back on your plastic travel card the pass that you transferred on your phone, you can do it for free at an ATM Point (book an appointment with the app).

  • If you still have your travel card, bring it with you. It will be reactivated
  • If you no longer have the plastic travel card, you will be given a new one

How to turn a digital travel card into a plastic travel card

If you have created a new travel card on the app but prefer to use a plastic travel card to load your passes, you can request it at an ATM Point (book an appointment with the app). As for all new physical travel cards, the cost is 10 euros. The digital travel card will be cancelled. The pass will be transferred to the new plastic travel card.

Why can't I keep my pass on my phone and also on my travel card?

The pass is personal and cannot be used by multiple people. That's why you can't keep it on multiple phones, on multiple travel cards, or on your phone and travel card at the same time.
